REDUCING VARIABLE EXPENSES

Learning to reduce essential variable expenses is one way that most people, even those who are not in debt, try to cut down on their monthly expenses. Getting good at this is useful even after you reach your goals. Here are some ideas:

■ Learn to prepare more frugal meals. Switching to cheap, nutritious foods like beans and rice can dramatically reduce your food budget. Also, drinking water instead of soft drinks can save you a fortune.
■ Start using coupons and shopping for bargains. (However, don't drive miles and miles to save 2 cents on milk, because you'll burn more in gas than you'll save.)

■ Never go to the grocery store hungry, because you'll tend to buy more than you intended.
■ Buy generic food, household goods, medications - anything available in generic form, if it saves you money.
■ Change automobile insurance companies to receive a lower monthly premium.
■ Wear a sweater instead of turning up the heat, or open the windows instead of running the air conditioner. A few degrees of difference in temperature can make a signifcant diference in your heating and cooling bills.
■ Learn to do minor repairs and home maintenance jobs yourself.
■ Repair or mend items rather than replacing them.
■ Walk, carpool, or take public transportation when possible to save money on gasoline.

It may happen some day, but for now, few of us live in communities with public transport jewels. For most, cars are a necessity. That means borrowing for automobile purchases and upkeep (and budgeting for same) are necessities as well.

In the age-old debate about buying versus leasing, we come down firmly on the side of buying. Leasing commits you to a perpetual car payment, and who needs that? On the other hand, financing a car is a losing proposition because cars are a depreciating asset. Not only does the value of your car decline every year, but you’re also paying interest on the money you’ve borrowed. Owning a car may be a necessity, but it comes with a big price tag.
Our advice on autos is to own a car, take good care of it, plan on keeping it for eight to 10 years or until repair costs become excessive, then purchase a new one. Here are some other “Rules of the Road” on auto financing:

When things begin to go wrong and you must pay for repairs, even as you’re making loan payments, you could be on a long downward spiral. Also, be wary of “extended warranties,” especially for used cars. These warranties typically are not “bumper to bumper” and contain many exclusions tucked away in the small print.
