NEEDING HELP ON DEBT CONSOLIDATION
A considerable amount of software has been designed to help you with the numbers when you're working on debts or budgets. If your only worry is getting the numbers right, these products may be all you need. Of course, if you're really broke, you're probably better off using the free calculators that you may be able to find online, but if you have some discretionary income left in your budget, financial software may be something you want to consider.
As an exercise, spread all the credit cards each of you carries on a table before you. Now, try to name the issuer of each credit card—not Visa, MasterCard, or American Express, but the bank or financial institution that issues the card—as well as the annual interest rate for each card. Loser has to call the issuers to negotiate better rates. The goal here is to make you more aware of the interest you’re paying on credit-card purchases, cash advances, and transfers. Once you become more familiar with eyepopping interest rates, you’re likely to exercise more caution with credit-card debt. It wouldn’t hurt to make those calls to negotiate better rates.
In today’s competitive environment, you might get results that will surprise and please you.
In the first go-round, do it as individuals, without consulting your partner. When each of you has finished, compare notes. Are there differences in the allocations each of you has penciled in? If so, this may imply differences in goals. Talk about those differences. See if you can establish mutually agreeable goals and budget allocations. Now, fill out the budget template again, this time working together.
Sometimes, uncontrolled spending reveals deep-seated wounds or emotional needs. You may be escaping loneliness, depression, or fear or avoiding the need to face behavior that's hurting you. Perhaps you haven't learned appropriate ways of dealing with stress. You may feel exhilarated when you've been out on a spending spree. Or pursuing the newest or biggest or best may help you anesthetize feelings of inadequacy. There are myriad reasons people get out of control, but no matter what reasons lie behind your spending, you can find a solution to your problem. Counseling can be a good way to deal with the problems behind the spending, but what if you can't cover the expense? You still have options.
Maybe you don't need the help of a professional debt counselor at least not in the flesh. A wide range of books, videos, and audio tapes are available on working your way through a wide range of problems, from a simple lack of discipline to recovery from abuse or emotional disorders. Don't worry that this is a "second rate" choice - studies have shown that an individual who is determined to change can be just as successful using alternative methods as those who seek professional help. Alternative methods can include anything from talking to friends to soul-searching to reading a good self-help book.
So whichever method, or combination of methods, works best for you - from private counseling to a good book on helping yourself recover - do seek the healing that will help make everything, including debt recovery, easier, happier, and healthier.
