DEBT COUNSELING AND DEBT HELP

Sometimes, things get to be more than you can handle alone. Depending on how deeply you're in debt and/or how you got into debt, you can turn to numerous programs, organizations, and individuals that can give you a hand - either financially or emotionally.

Refer to your worksheet on how you got into debt, as well as your list of outstanding debts, to determine which of the sources might be appropriate for you. Be honest with yourself as you review this information, and seek the help that's appropriate for your situation.

If you simply must have a new car before you pay off your old vehicle, a lease could make sense for you. Typically, when you trade in a car with a loan balance, the car is rarely worth what you owe for the new vehicle. Therefore, your buddy Smilin’ Jack just rolls over the remaining balance onto your new car loan, creating a debt snowball that is careening downhill. If you do lease, pay attention to the terms of the lease and mileage allowances.

Once you pay off your car loan, don’t go on a spending spree with the money you’re saving. Instead, establish a car fund and contribute each month the money you were paying for your car loan and the variable expenses. That way, you can pay cash or make a larger down payment for your next car, eliminating the need for a loan or substantially reducing its size.

As we close our discussion of debt, we must address one of the more delicate dilemmas : how to handle debts each of you may have accumulated. Years ago, such a discussion hardly would have been necessary. People married young, well before they had accumulated significant debts—or assets, for that matter.
Today, the opposite is often true. When people wed today, it may be after a decade or longer as professionals, plenty of time to borrow plenty of money. The same is true of people in second or third marriages. It would be hard to imagine people in that situation without some debt burden.
When couples bring individual assets to the marital table, that’s a cause for joy. When the baggage includes debts, the issue is more complex and more volatile.

Broadly, there are two approaches you can take. You may decide to reduce your debt as individuals, or you may elect to pay down premarital debt as a couple. Each approach brings advantages and disadvantages.
Paying down premarital debt as individuals can prevent conflict, particularly if one party incurred substantially more debt than the other. With this approach, the partner with the smaller debt load doesn’t feel financially strapped by decisions made before the marriage. This approach also permits each spouse to maintain a significant level of independence.

Debt counselors can be useful if you fnd that you simply can't make the figures in your budget work. Also, for some people, having someone give them assignments or hold them accountable works better than doing it on their own. Although a lot of debt counselors also offer consolidation.

But there are disadvantages as well. For one, the debt might not be paid down as quickly or as efficiently as possible, because only one partner is focusing on it. In addition, that partner may feel resentment at being abandoned on Debt Island. That could promote continued use of debt, resulting in financial hardships and marital discord.
Some services that identify themselves as debt counselors are really just consolidators. All counselors need information about your budget and amount of debt in order to help you, but make sure that you know what you're getting into before you supply detailed information, such as the names of your creditors or credit card account numbers.

Many debt counselors and financial planners have written books or recorded videos or audio tapes about debt recovery. Libraries and bookstores are full of titles that may help you get through both the financial and emotional aspects of debt recovery. See the CliffsNotes Resource Center at the back of this book for a couple of titles to consider, though you may find others you like.
