BE SMART ABOUT SPENDING AND SAVING

Saving is critical. Don’t make the mistake of spending first and saving what you can when you get a chance. The easiest way to save consistently is to have a set amount of your paycheck deposited directly into your savings account. Once you have determined how much you will save each month, break that amount out by paycheck. Even if that amount is only $10 per weekly paycheck, it will add up quickly to about $500 annually.

If your workplace does not offer direct deposit, investigate automatic money-builder accounts at your bank. For example, some banks offer Certificates of Deposit (CDs) that can be established with a set amount (usually $500 or thereabouts) and build up by automatically transferring another amount from your checking account to the CD.

Surely you have all heard about living within your monthly expenses means, but these days, it’s more common to admit, or even brag, about living above our means. Consistently living above one’s means or earnings is a recipe for financial uncertainty in the years that matter most—when you have a family, when you pay for college, when you retire. Make a pact with yourself and your significant other to start living within your means today. You will be ensuring a secure tomorrow.

Instead of buying costly magazines, take them out from your library. Most local libraries will allow you to borrow magazines for seven days. This is much less expensive than purchasing them for upward of $3.50 per issue.

While you are at the library, find out if you are allowed to borrow CDs, videos, or DVDs; again, the cost of rental far outspends the cost of borrowing, which is free.
If you read the newspaper regularly (daily or weekly) consider subscribing, as a subscription is almost always less expense than purchasing single copies. Better still, read the online version for free.

Within a couple of months of your meeting with the trustee, a court hearing takes place. If you completed the necessary steps and have been honest and open with your creditors and the trustee, and if your distress is real, the bankruptcy judge will probably grant you a formal "forgiveness" of dischargeable debts, with the exception of any debt for which a creditor has filed a successful appeal.

You begin the process of rebuilding your life, with no credit, little property and a seriously damaged credit history, and still carrying any nondischargeable debts that are outstanding.

You must be able to repay all, or at least many of your debts during the three to fve years allowed under the plan. (Bear in mind that you don't have to pay interest or fnance charges on most of your debts during this period, so your debts will be less than if you repaid them on your own or tried to get a consolidation loan.) In addition, there are limits on how much you can owe in unsecured and secured debt.

By following these rules, you have become smart about the way you spend your money by developing a budget. If you were honest when you developed your budget, you will know how much you need to spend each week. You will also know how much you can afford to spend on the little extras, like treating yourself to a pedicure for a special event or going out for happy hour with the guys from work. As long as you are meeting your commitments to your bills and saving, you can afford to spend your money on the goods and services that might not be necessary, but that make you happy.

Before you decide that you have a license to spend your money willy-nilly, remember that all spending should be planned. This doesn’t mean that you need to sit down and plan out every double latte that you will buy. However, it does mean that you should give yourself an upper limit on the free spending.

Then, take out that amount of money from the ATM once a week. Or, write the amount on a sticky-note and stick it to your credit card. Every time you use your credit card, deduct the amount of your purchase from your total allotment on the note. Either way, the total amount of free spending should be planned.
