THE ALTERNATIVE TO CREDIT UNIONS

Credit reports have been designed to provide information in a way that creditors, who need the information for decisionmaking, can easily read and understand. The report identifies you by name, address, date of birth, and social security number. Your employer is also listed.
A summary of your outstanding debts is included, and if any amount is past due, the amount is noted. Various elements, like open credit card accounts, public record items, and collection items, are grouped together by type. You also fnd a list of past requests made for the report, so you can see who has checked your credit record. If you have any diffculty reading the report or have questions about how entries should be interpreted, call the customer service department of the bureau from which you requested the report.

If you want an alternative to commercial banks, you can consider a credit union. Credit unions offer many of the same services as commercial banks: checking accounts,savings accounts, vacation clubs, ATM services, and calendars at the holidays. They generally can offer better rates on loans and savings, however, because they don't payfederal taxes.Credit unions are non-profit organizations that were imported to the United States from Germany in the early 1900s. They were regulatedin 1934 by the Federal Credit Union Act,which limits membership to "groups having a common bond of occupation or association." Groups from particular geographical areas alsowere eligible to join credit unions.

Membership limits were expanded in the early1980s, however, mostly to accommodate small businesses that didn't have enough employees
to establish their own credit unions. These small businesses were allowed to join existingcredit unions, causing much dissatisfaction among banks. Banks and credit unions have been sparring over the relaxed membership requirements for the role of the debt collectors, with banks claiming thatcredit unions have an unfair tax advantage. The Supreme Court recently ruled on theside of the banks, saying credit unions have been allowed to add members thatshouldn't have been eligible to join.

Credit union membership has extended far beyond people who work for a particular business orindustry. There are credit unions organized by ethnicity, such as the Polish-American Credit Union, and even by family name. There seven Lee Credit Unions, supportedby the approximately 100,000people in the United States withthe last name Lee. If you're interested in joining a credit union, find out if you're eligible for membership through work. If not, you might be able to join one based on membership in a professional organization or club.
