PREPARING THE LIST OF YOUR DEBTS
Most people still perceive a household budget as a financial straightjacket that takes all the fun out of life. The thought of having to account for the money they spend, or even be aware of where they spend it, is an intimidating, unsettling prospect for most. Even the most enthusiastic proponents of budgeting will acknowledge that budgets are restrictive and that they do limit how you spend and where you spend. And that doesn’t feel particularly good.
When two people unite in marriage, the reluctance to budget can grow even deeper. After all, here are two people with potentially different approaches to spending and saving. Developing a monthly blueprint that accommodates both philosophies can be a prospect so daunting that most couples don’t even make the effort.
To get started on your list, ask yourself the following questions:
■ Why did I take on my frst debt?
■ How do I feel about debt?
■ How does spending money make me feel?
■ Do I ever "binge shop"? If so, what sorts of things trigger the binges?
■ What reaction do I have to advertisements for items that I want but can't afford?
■ Do I believe that paying the minimum amount on my credit card will get the balance paid off?
■ Am I ever surprised by how high a bill is?
■ Do I forget about money that I've spent?
■ Do I balance my checking account regularly?
■ Do I have any expensive hobbies or habits?
■ Do I feel competitive with or threatened by those around me?
■ How often do I eat out?
■ When I eat out, do I collect cash from others and charge the meal?
■ Do I plan my purchases, or do I buy on impulse?
Review your list on how much you owe. The information may give you even more ideas about how you got into debt. Add any discoveries to your list of trouble behaviors and triggers.
As you write, more ideas may come to you. Record everything that crosses your mind regarding your spending habits, whether it's a feeling that you must pamper yourself to deal with stress, a hope that you can overcome your sense of dissatisfaction with life, or a belief that you need to impress someone.
A journal can be particularly helpful in identifying emotiontriggered spending, as well as in tracking your progress and recording what you learn, both about the process and about yourself.
As you continue through the rest of this book, add to your list any new information that you discover about yourself. Knowing why yo u spend and what your triggers are can help you figure out how to stop uncontrolled spending.
