ASSESSING YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION

As you progress, you may find that you need or want more equipment, such as a computer and financial software. You can easily work these items into the process, but you don't need them at the beginning. In fact, if you don't have a computer, you can handle this entire process with pencil and paper - so don't think that you need to run out and invest in an array of computer hardware and gadgets and put yourself further into debt!

On-line banking also helps you keep on top of your account. Because you can go on-line and view up-to-date information as frequently as you like, it’s easier to know where you stand. You can balance your checkbook on an ongoing basis, rather than waiting until month’s end and sifting through 30 days’ accumulation of paper.

That having been said, it’s wise to remember that on-line banking isn’t the be-all and end-all for your decisions about the number of accounts you should maintain. You and your spouse will need to work out the key issues—control, dependency, allowances—whether you’re paying on-line or not.

You can set your repayment priorities later. Right now, you need to figure out how far in debt you really are.
It's time to pick up a pencil and paper and grab your calculator. Use the following financial workspace as an example to record all your debts. Total up your debts by type, and then calculate your grand total. This fnal number represents your total outstanding debt. If an item in the example worksheet doesn't apply to you, skip it; also feel free to add or delete items so that the worksheet accurately refects your debt.

Finally, set aside time to work on this project. If you wait to "find" time, you'll end up doing nothing. You must determine to create the space in your schedule, because your fnancial future depends on it. Consider setting aside an entire morning or afternoon to get started. You may need to get back to it for another hour or two at a later time, until you have a good plan worked out.
After that, an hour or so each week can go toward the reviewing, learning, and ongoing planning that are necessary to make you financially solid.
Financial planning is a process. It is never really "over," because you'll use money your whole life. The process takes time, but it's worth the effort. And like any "exercise," it gets easier as you get stronger and in better "shape."
